2011-2012 Season Schedule The Carolina Youth Symphony will perform eight concerts in this, our 56th music season. (rehearsal schedule revised November 14) Winter Concert - SO and CO - March 4, 2012 The Symphony and Concert Orchestras perform at 4pm in the Peace Center for the Performing Arts. Leslie W. Hicken and James Kilgus, Conducting. Soloists - CYS/TD Concerto Competition Winners: Eleanor Mayes, piano & Victoria Pan, violin.Presented by TD Bank RO and CO Concert - May 13, 2012 The Repertory Orchestra and Concert Orchestra perform at 3pm in McAlister Auditorium on the Furman University campus. Ginger Greer and James Kilgus Conducting.Senior Honors Concert - SO Orchestra - May 13, 2012 The Symphony Orchestra performs at 5pm in honor of the graduating seniors of the CYS. Leslie W. Hicken, Conducting McAlister Auditorium, Furman University Guest Artists: Senior Solo Competition WinnersFurman Lakeside Pops Concert - All Orchestras - May 31, 2012 Leslie W. Hicken, James Kilgus and Ginger Greer, Conducting. This CYS season finale features all three orchestras merged into one large and talented group. Free to the public, the performance begins at 7:30 pm at Furman's Lakeside Amphitheater.Past Events of the 2011-2012 Season Summer Camp Concert - All Orchestras - August 14, 2011- Leslie W. Hicken, James Kilgus and Ginger Greer, Conducting - Our inaugural concert serves as the closing event of the CYS Summer Camp held at Camp Greenville each August. After a weekend of camp activities mixed with rehearsals, we gather to hear the first sounds of the new season. CYS Fall Concert - All Orchestras - October 23, 2011- Leslie W. Hicken, James Kilgus and Ginger Greer, Conducting - The CYS Fall Concert was held at the Peace Center in October. This event was our first to include principal players of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra performing alongside CYS musicians. The combination of professional and student musicians provided our students a unique glimpse into the orchestra profession. We look forward to continuing our new tradition with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra in future seasons. Veterans Concert - CO - November 12, 2011- James Kilgus conducting - The Concert Orchestra performed patriotic selections in a Salute to Veterans, past and present. The concert was held at the Upcountry History Museum as the kickoff for the Veterans Weekend Celebration. Holiday Concert - All Orchestras - December 11, 2011- Leslie W. Hicken, James Kilgus and Ginger Greer, Conducting with Guest Choir - Chicora Voices - Alan Reed, Director. The 3pm concert was held in McAlister Auditorium on the Furman University campus and featured works by Anderson, Bizet, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rutter and Ungar. Presentation: A History of the Carolina Youth Symphony - December 14, 2011- Dr. Robert Chesebro, Carolina Youth Symphony's Conductor Emeritus, presented the organization's history as part of the Upcountry History Museum's Lunchtime Program. Beginning with one orchestra in 1955, the CYS has expanded to three orchestras comprised of student musicians from North and South Carolina. Dr. Chesebro served as conductor of the Carolina Youth Symphony from 1972-1997. WMUU 94.5fm Radio Broadcast: CYS Holiday Concert - Christmas Eve 2011 - A replay of the CYS Holiday Concert performed at the Peace Center on December 11, 2011. CYS Museum Exhibit: Celebrating Over 50 Years of Excellence - Oct-Dec 2011 - A Upcountry History Museum exhibit chronicling 55 years of the Carolina Youth Symphony, featuring the Verner Award for Excellence in the Arts, awarded to the CYS in 2011. Exhibit items also included photos, news articles, performance video, concert posters, and displays highlighting achievements of the CYS, our alumni and conductors. |
